Organize Motion Tiles and Folder Tiles with tags, facets, and profiles so tiles can be grouped, searched, and structured without overloading tile names.

Object Tagging with Tags and Facets

Create a cleaner structure for Motion Tiles and Folder Tiles by using tags and facets instead of putting every detail into the tile name.

Object Tagging

Object Tagging allows Administrators and Managers/System Owners to organize Motion Tiles and Folder Tiles using tags and facets.

This is useful when working with large numbers of tiles across customers, buildings, locations, equipment types, rows, or other shared groupings.

Instead of relying on long tile names that include every possible attribute, tags and facets give Motion a more structured way to organize, search, and maintain tile information.

When to use tags and facets

Use tags and facets when you need to:

  1. Group related Motion Tiles or Folder Tiles

  2. Organize tiles by location, equipment, row, customer, or other shared context

  3. Search and filter tiles using structured information

  4. Avoid long tile names that contain too many attributes

  5. Improve data consistency across a large deployment

Permissions

Tags and facets can be created or updated by:

  1. Administrators

  2. Managers/System Owners

Viewers can see tags and facets, but cannot create or update them.

If you do not see the tagging options described below, contact your Motion account administrator.

Tags vs. facets

Tags and facets are related, but they are not the same.

Tags

Tags are flexible labels that can be added to a Motion Tile or Folder Tile.

Use tags for general grouping or association. For example, a tile may have tags such as Critical, Legacy, Humidity, or IAQ.

Tags are useful when the association does not need to follow a strict structure.

Facets

Facets are structured fields that become available after a Profile is selected.

Use facets for common attributes that should be tracked consistently across similar tiles. For example, data center tiles may need structured values for City, Building, Location, Equipment, or Row.

Facets help keep important tile context organized without forcing all of that context into the tile name.

Profiles

A Profile determines which facets are available for a tile.

A Profile must be selected before facet fields will appear.

The currently available profile is Data Center. The Data Center profile currently includes these facets:

  1. City

  2. Building

  3. Location

  4. Equipment

  5. Row

Available profiles and facets may change as Motion adds support for additional use cases.

How tags and facets appear in Motion

Tags and facets can be used to organize and search Motion Tiles and Folder Tiles.

Facets appear on the actual tile in the app.

Tags do not appear on the actual tile in the app.

This means facets should be used for structured information that needs to be visible on the tile itself, while tags should be used for flexible grouping and search/filtering.

Step 1: Open the tile configuration

Steps

  1. Navigate to Controls

  2. Click Tiles

  3. Find the Motion Tile or Folder Tile you want to configure

  4. Open the tile configuration

Step 2: Select a Profile

In the tile configuration, find the Tags section.

Steps

  1. Open the Profile dropdown

  2. Select the appropriate Profile

  3. After a Profile is selected, the available facet fields will appear

A Profile must be selected before facets can be configured.

Step 3: Add facet values

After selecting a Profile, complete the facet fields that apply to the tile.

For the Data Center profile, available facets currently include City, Building, Location, Equipment, and Row.

Steps

  1. Click into a facet field

  2. Select an existing value, or type a new value

  3. If the value does not already exist, create the new value

  4. Repeat for any other facets that apply

Facet values are organized by facet. For example, a Building value is separate from a Row value, even if the same text appears in both places.

Step 4: Add tags

Tags can be added in the Tags field.

Steps

  1. Click into the Tags field

  2. Select an existing tag, or type a new tag

  3. If the tag does not already exist, create the new tag

  4. Add any other tags that apply

Use tags for flexible grouping. Use facets for structured fields that should be consistent across similar tiles.

Step 5: Save the tile configuration

After adding the Profile, facets, and tags, save the tile configuration.

Steps

  1. Review the selected Profile

  2. Review facet values

  3. Review tags

  4. Save the tile configuration

Adding tags and facets to Folder Tiles

Tags and facets can also be added to Folder Tiles.

The workflow is the same as configuring a standard Motion Tile.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Controls

  2. Click Tiles

  3. Open the Folder Tile configuration

  4. Select a Profile

  5. Add facet values

  6. Add tags

  7. Save the Folder Tile configuration

Searching and filtering with tags and facets

Tags and facets can be used to search and filter tiles.

Use the specific tag or facet filter fields to find tiles that match a tag or facet value.

Keyword search currently searches tile names. To search by tag or facet, use the tag or facet filter field directly.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Controls

  2. Click Tiles

  3. Open the search or filter menu

  4. Select the tag or facet field you want to search

  5. Select or enter the value

  6. Review the filtered tile list

Naming best practices

Tile Name and Display Name still exist and should still be used.

The difference is that names should not be overloaded with every attribute about the tile.

Use Tile Name as the internal tile identifier.

Use Display Name as the user-facing label that makes the tile easy to recognize.

Use facets for structured information such as City, Building, Location, Equipment, and Row.

Use tags for flexible grouping, labels, or associations.

For example, instead of creating a very long display name that includes building, location, equipment, row, and measurement type, use a shorter Display Name and add the structured details as facets.

Best practices

  1. Select a Profile before trying to add facets.

  2. Use facets for structured values that should stay consistent across similar tiles.

  3. Use tags for flexible grouping or labels.

  4. Keep Display Names readable and concise.

  5. Avoid putting every location, equipment, customer, or row detail into the tile name.

  6. Reuse existing tags and facet values when possible.

  7. Create new tags and facet values only when a new value is actually needed.

Troubleshooting

I do not see facet fields

Select a Profile first. Facet fields only appear after a Profile is selected.

I do not see the Profile, Tags, or Facets fields

You may not have permission to create or update tags and facets. Contact your Motion account administrator.

I searched for a tag or facet value and did not find the tile

Keyword search currently searches tile names. Use the specific tag or facet filter field to search by tag or facet value.

A tag does not appear on the tile

Tags do not appear on the actual tile in the app. Facets appear on the tile.

A facet value does not appear on the tile

Confirm that a Profile is selected, the facet value has been added, and the tile configuration has been saved.

I need to create a new tag or facet value

Type the new value into the tag or facet field and create it if it does not already exist.
